Wilson Cruz: From My So-Called Life to LGBTQ Activist
Wilson Cruz, born in Brooklyn, New York in 1973, is an American actor and LGBTQ activist. He is best known for his role as Rickie Vasquez on the TV series My So-Called Life and his recurring character Junito on Noah’s Arc. Cruz was encouraged to pursue theater by his parents and began acting at age seven. He also has a talent for singing and has performed across the country with Young Americans, as well as at Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and Sea World/Orlando.
Cruz attended California State University at San Bernardino, where he was pursuing a double major in theater and English before he landed the role of Rickie Vasquez on My So-Called Life. He made his television debut in 1991 on the series Great Scott! in the recurring role of Jonathan, an obnoxious choirboy.
Cruz came out as gay to his parents at age 19, initially shocking his mother but eventually gaining her acceptance. His father, however, threw him out of the house, and Cruz spent the next few months living in his car and at friends’ homes. He later reconciled with his father and has since become an outspoken LGBTQ activist, supporting gay rights causes.
Today, Cruz has a net worth of $2 million dollars. In his free time, he enjoys playing the saxophone and collecting vintage black-and-white photos of actors. He admires the work of Tom Hanks and Robert De Niro.
