Most gyms are open on New Year's Day but may be operating on a reduced schedule. Some gyms have also modified their services amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Check with your local branch before traveling to confirm the exact hours of operation and any COVID-19 safety restrictions that may be in place.
Here we look at the New Year's Day hours at some fitness chains across the country.
Planet Fitness
Most Planet Fitness gyms are open every day throughout the year, including on New Year's Day. Most branches are typically open 24 hours a day. Contact your local branch to confirm the exact hours of operation for January 1.
The fitness chain has introduced several safety measures amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, including a face-covering requirement for all members. Guests can also see how many people are currently at their local branch before visiting using the company's Crowd Meter mobile app.
See the Planet Fitness website for more information on COVID-19 safety at its gyms.
Equinox
Opening and closing times at Equinox gyms vary over holidays. Contact your local branch to confirm the exact hours on New Year's Day.
Equinox also introduced several COVID-19 safety measures, including temperature checks before entry, mask requirements and advanced booking for all gym sessions using the Equinox app.
"Touch-free temperature checks will be required upon each entry to the club. If your temperature is higher than 100.4 degrees, or local guidelines, you will not be permitted to access the club for 3 days from the time of your reading. Equinox may, at its discretion, offer to retest your temperature one time. Please review our full Member Policies addendum for full details," the company said.
Some venues require guests to wear a mask at all times, including during exercise, while others allow guests to remove their masks when exercising.
